(Zaragoza, Thursday, April 24, 2025). On Friday, April 25, the town of Aliaga (Teruel) will host the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Geolodía (#20YearsGeolodía)—a day full of emotion and outreach, commemorating two decades of bringing geology closer to society.
Geolodía is a free activity open to the general public that has enabled thousands of people to discover the value of geological heritage and the importance of geology in addressing today’s societal challenges. The initiative began in Teruel in 2005 as a local excursion designed to raise awareness of the Aliaga Geological Park among the local population. Over the past 20 years, Geolodía has grown into a nationwide network of simultaneous activities across Spain, evolving to include both in-person and virtual formats, diversifying its approaches, and opening new communication channels to reach broader and more diverse audiences.
As part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations, a Tribute Ceremony will be held in which José Luis Simón Gómez and Luis Alcalá Martínez, the founders of Geolodía, will be named Honorary Members of the Geological Society of Spain. The key role played by the founding institutions in Teruel will also be recognized: the Fundación Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel–Dinópolis, the University of Zaragoza, the Instituto de Estudios Turolenses, the Parque Cultural del Maestrazgo, and the Aliaga Town Council.
The celebration will include activities such as the launch of the contest “What does a Geopark mean to you?”, a guided walk along the original Geolodía 2005 route, outreach talks, the premiere of the commemorative video A Shared Secret, and the inauguration of the exhibition 20 Years of Geolodía.
Geolodía is organized by the Geological Society of Spain, with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC), the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS), AEPECT, Repsol, AGGEP, and dozens of other institutions and companies.
