Zaragoza, June 2025. The University of Zaragoza, through its Sustainability and 2030 Agenda Office and the University Institute for Environmental Sciences of Aragón (IUCA), is organizing a public discussion on Thursday, June 20, at the Faculty of Law, to explore one of the most urgent legal questions of our time: Should ecocide be recognized as an international crime?
Under the title “Let’s Change the Rules to Protect the Planet: Do We Need an Ecocide Law?”, the event will bring together experts from a range of disciplines to discuss the feasibility and urgency of introducing legal tools to prosecute the most serious environmental crimes at the international level.
This event is part of the global artistic and civic project “Let’s Change the Rules – Choirs for the Ecocide Law”, which raises awareness of the need to protect ecosystems through international legislation, combining science, law, and the arts.
Interdisciplinary Debate, Citizen Participation and a Commitment to Sustainability
The day will also feature participatory activities such as a Redoll Repair Café, organized by the European REDOLL project in collaboration with the University Institute for Energy and Resource Efficiency (Unizar) and the Zaragoza City Council. This space promotes real circular economy practices through the repair of everyday objects and sustainable consumption.
The event will close with an interactive collective reflection, where attendees will be invited to participate in a real-time vote, whose results will serve as a synthesis of the discussion.
The conference has been awarded the UNIZAR Sustainable Event seal, recognizing its commitment to reducing and offsetting its carbon footprint.
